What To Do For Different Forms Of Dermatitis Skin Care Problems?

A variety of different types of skin problems can be defined as dermatitis, but they are all similar in one way. Dermatitis is an inflammation of the skin. Skin areas affected by dermatitis become red, swollen and itchy. Lesions are also possible. Dermatitis is neither terminal nor disabling in normal circumstances, but it can certainly make you physically and emotionally uncomfortable.

The intent of this article is to provide answers to the questions most people have about different types of dermatitis.

What does dermatitis look like? Some people say it causes the skin to look like it has been doused with hot water. Besides the typical red color, blisters may sometimes form, and there could also be fluid secretions. Since dermatitis also makes the skin itchy, some people make the inflammation look worse by scratching (which admittedly, can be a hard urge to resist).

What are the causes of dermatitis? Dermatitis can be caused in a number of different ways. Heredity and allergies are typical. Irritants and pollution in your environment are among the causes of dermatitis. Some types of dermatitis may also be triggered by stress - both physical and emotional. Of course, causes vary depending on what kind of dermatitis you have.

Is dermatitis normally contagious? No, dermatitis is not a contagious disease and cannot be transmitted from one human being to another.

What are some of the most prevalent types of dermatitis?

Atopic dermatitis This type features an itchy rash that comes and goes. It is a chronic condition that is better known as eczema. Eczema sometimes runs in families, with severe cases appearing in children. Often, it improves as the child grows older. Most doctors believe stress cannot cause eczema, but it seems stress can aggravate the condition. Researchers haven't been able to pinpoint an exact cause (or causes) for eczema. But if your skin tends to be dry and irritable, you are more likely to get it than other people. A problem in the immune system affecting the skin may also play a role.

Atopic dermatitis is usually treated with lotions containing hydrocortisone.

Contact or allergic dermatitis The word "contact" is the key here. Contact or allergic dermatitis occurs when your skin comes in contact with an irritant that causes a rash,

Seborrheic dermatitis This kind of dermatitis features scaling with yellowish, oily spots, usually on the scalp, along with a red rash, It’s called cradle cap when it appears on an infant. Individuals with neurological challenges like Parkinson's disease seem to be at greater risk to get this type of dermatitis, as are those under a lot of physical stress. Oily hair and skin may also be contributing factors.

Doctors generally recommend special shampoos with tar, pyrithione zinc, salicylic acid or ketoconazole as the active ingredient. as the most reliable treatment. Other treatment options include hydrocortisone creams and lotions.

Perioral dermatitis A bumpy rash around the mouth is the most typical symptom of this type of dermatitis, which is probably a form of rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis or adult acne. Certain moisturizers, makeup and topical corticosteroids may make this condition worse, so don't try to self-treat it - talk to your doctor about ways to get relief.

Perioral dermatitis usually responds to treatment with the oral antibiotic tetracycline, but it can be a long process. Once the rash is gone however, it often returns. Therefore your doctor may suggest continuing treatment for several months to prevent a recurrence.

Neurodermatitis Psoriasis, eczema and dry skin are often associated with this type of dermatitis. This type of dermatitis often triggers itching in a specific location, like the ankles, wrists, arms or neck. When you have neurodermatitis, you can usually sooth your skin by applying wet compresses. Hydrocortisone lotions and creams can also be helpful. Doctors will prescribe antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications for some patients. The most important thing is to avoid scratching, which just aggravates your skin even further.

Stasis dermatitis This kind of dermatitis happens when something triggers an accumulation of fluid beneath the skin. The legs are most often affected by this type of dermatitis, which occurs because the fluid beneath the skin blocks certain processes that keep the skin healthy. The key to treating stasis dermatitis is diagnosing the cause of the fluid build up and removing it. Elastic support hose may help but in certain circumstances, it may become necessary to perform surgery. Sometimes, you can get relief by applying wet dressings, which not only soften fragile, thickened skin but help prevent infection.
