Exhilirating Glenwood Springs Activities Might Include Whitewater Rafting or Camping
Loads of Colorado Vacation Activities Packed into a Small Space
Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley – a picturesque 50-mile stretch running from Glenwood Springs to Aspen – presents an absolute treasure trove of summer vacation activities.
Carved out of the Elk Mountains on the western edge of the Rockies, the Roaring Fork Valley begins near 11,000-foot Independent Pass, and ambles along with the flow of the Roaring Fork River. Nearly all of the valley is shrouded by the conifers and aspens of the White River National Forest – the top recreation forest in the country – according to the United States Forest Service.
The valley’s most sought-after locale for hiking and backpacking is the Maroon Bells area near Snowmass. Two of the state’s highest peaks, the Bells soar above 14,000 feet. The topographical distinctiveness of the area leads to spectacular views. A complimentary shuttle bus runs three times an hour all through the summer to Maroon Lake, the point at which most visitors begin their trek to the peaks.
Camping in the Snowmass wilderness area is a huge draw. The backcountry environs of a glacial valley dotted with massive fields of native wildflowers draws millions of visitors each year.
Majestic camping locales can be accessed near Carbondale, which looks north to the southern face of Mount Sopris.
Carbondale sits along Highway 83 at the confluence of the Roaring Fork and Crystal River. In addition to many private camps and RV parks, the federal government is in charge of Avalanche Creek’s highly desired camp, which offers over a dozen campsites that are doled out based on arrival time. A minimal fee for overnight stays is charged but the panoramic views from above 7,000 feet, the teeming waters of the creek, trailheads to Maroon Bells, Snowmass Wilderness area, and Sopris, and the site’s remote feeling despite being just a few miles from Carbondale makes the campground a popular stay for summer vacation activities in the region.
Colorado and the federal government also supervise and care for scores of completely free campsites throughout the Roaring Fork Valley; however, the area is spotted with quite a few pockets of private land so purchasing local maps can keep you off of private land.

The Ruedi Recreation region, only a few miles from Basalt on the Fryingpan River, includes Ruedi Reservoir. The lake is popularsuitable for water-skiing and boating, and the forest looming over the area is a huge draw for hunters.
Much of the Roaring Fork River is designated as Gold Medal fishing and there is no shortage of professional fishing guides who can make a fishing trip far more enjoyable. The rivers run very high during the spring melt when the snowcaps are transformed into rushing river currents. During the hottest periods though, the Roaring Fork, Frying Pan, and Crystal Rivers can be waded or float fished.
From Aspen to Glenwood Springs there is no shortage of choices for summer vacation activities. And the choices go far beyond campsites and fishing holes. Everyday sees the waters filled with families tubing as a group or whitewater rafters taking on the rivers.
Consider a Western Colorado Vacation for your summer trip

A Week In The Country With Bella Seldon, By E.K. $14.14 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:3jp HE cottage stood on a rising ground, over- l looking the sea, and the garden lay all along one side of it. Close to the house a terrace had been built, with a gravel walk on the top, under the windows. These, both in the parlour and drawing-room, were large French windows, opening down to the ground, so that you could walk through them out upon the terrace. A flight of stone steps led down into the rest of the garden, which was very prettily laid out. There was a smooth, green grassplot in the centre, with beds cut in it for flowers; and all round this were gravel walks, edged with box, and more flowers. Just beyond these bedsthere was a beautiful green hedge, which hid the furthest part of the garden from sight. A little walk ran round one end of this hedge, and behind was a very long bed, in which grew cabbages, onions, some peas and beans, a few lettuces, four gooseberry bushes, and a small plot of strawberry plants. All these good things, however, were not what Bella wanted to see just now, though she was well pleased with them whenever they appeared on the dinner-table. How fast she runs ! There! she has stopped at last, at the very end, and jumping for joy, exclaims, v Oh, it is coming out! my own dear little rose. Mamma, it is coming out!" Mamma is too far off to hear, and Bella has to be contented with talking to herself about her treasure. This was her own garden, and a very pretty spot it was, with a nice rustic seat in the corner, under the shelter of the hedge. Here she used to prevail upon her mamma to sit, with her work or a book, while she herself worked in the garden. The rose-bush she had planted with her own hands, right in the middle of the bed. Then there was a wallflower at each end, and a rowof mignonette all across the front. A primr... |
