Repair A Squeaking Door Yourself
If you possess your very own home, it helps if you can repair a few things by yourself; it seems there's always something that needs to be fixed. A squeaky door is one such issue. It isn't a big issue, but it sure can certainly be an irritant to everyone until it's fixed. It's those types of jobs you intend to fix yourself, because it is too minor to hire someone.
Listen closely to uncover the source of the squeak, so you understand exactly what needs fixing. Do not even consider replacing the door itself - do the swing evaluation first. Swing the door back and forth as you listen closely to pinpoint the source. You can usually be able to pinpoint the source by doing this, and determine the cause. If you listen closely, as you are swinging the door at various speeds, you should be able to determine the exact cause of the squeak.
One typical source of door squeaks is the need for lubrication of the hinges. So, tighten up each of the screws, and then get yourself a flat screwdriver to loosen-up the hinge pins, and pour some sewing machine oil, or WD-40 onto the hinge. Let the oil seep into the hinge, and sway the door back and forth several times. If this was the problem, the lubricant should have fixed it. If it still creaks, there may be another possible place to look. As time goes by, wood swells or maybe the door warps, and quite often when this happens, the wood is hitting other wood. If this is the cause, just move the door stop to keep it from hitting the door. All that you need to achieve this is really a block of wood and a hammer. Apply the hammer and the wood block to bang the door stop over slightly.
After the door quits squeaking and opens and closes without problems, you're done. The main problem with doing this, is that you will more than likely break the paint, and needs to be repainted. One more possible issue is when the hinge is rubbing against the door jam, which may be caused by the hinges being cut in too deeply, or maybe not cut in deeply enough. You will have to take the hinges off, and cut them in deeper, or find a shim to put behind the hinge. Virtually any door squeak can be fixed through this process.
If none of this is effective, you'll find that the whole door should be replaced. This is a relatively easy task if your door is of the pre-hung type. Doing this though, you ought to get doors that match up, and spend quite a bit of time repainting. Whatever it is, the great thing is to be able to complete it yourself.
